Do I have a TRF account?
If you are a teacher, a principal, or a certified administrator, YES!
As a teacher, or an Indiana public employee, you are a member of the Teacher Retirement Fund (TRF), and we contribute a percentage of your wages to the Indiana Public Retirement System (INPRS) to fund your future retirement benefits.
The TRF Member Handbook provides comprehensive, organized information; click the handbook below for more information!
The majority of teachers will receive two benefits when they retire.
Teachers new to TRF beginning July 1, 2019 have the option of enrolling in the TRF My Choice: Retirement Savings Plan. The My Choice Plan provides full vestment after 5 years, but all contributions fund the teacher's Defined Contribution (DC) account. My Choice Plan members do not receive a Defined Benefit (DB), or a pension.
YES! And you should! To start, you should register for an online account in the INPRS member portal if you haven't already. From there, you can monitor your benefits and manage your investments.
If you have never accessed your online INPRS account, click the laptop below. You can register your account with your social security number and date of birth.

Do I have a 401(a) retirement account?
If you are a teacher, a manager, or an administrator, YES!
A 401(a) retirement account is essentially a standard individual retirement account (IRA). We contribute a percentage of your wages to your account, and when you become fully vested and meet the retirement eligibility criteria, the funds in your account are yours, and you may manage them just as you would any IRA.
If you are a teacher or a manager, we contribute 1.5% of your wages to your 401(a) account. If you are an administrator, we contribute 2.0% of your wages to your 401(a) account.
You become fully vested after you complete five (5) years of service to the Corporation. At that time, 100% of the funds contributed to your account are yours!
Once you are fully vested, there are a number of qualifying reasons for which you may receive a distribution from your account.
Generally, any distribution you receive when you are under the age of 59.5 years are subject to an additional 10% tax. Once you are 59.5 years or older, you may receive distributions without paying any additional taxes.
Once you are vested in your 401(a) retirement account, the funds are yours. If you leave the Corporation before you retire, you may leave your funds in your account for the future, or you may request a rollover to transfer your funds to another eligible retirement account.
Can I contribute to a 403(b) retirement account?
YES, if you receive a regular paycheck!
A 403(b) retirement account is a voluntary, standard individual retirement account (IRA) for public school employees. We partner with American Fidelity, and American Fidelity assists with the administration of your 403(b) account and contributions.
We partner with a number of different 403(b) plan providers who offer both traditional post-tax retirement plans and Roth pre-tax retirement plans.
NO! 403(b) retirement accounts are optional, but if you hope to retire comfortably someday, you should consider opening and contributing to a 403(b) retirement account.
